Coaching for Lawyers Law Practice Tips

Law Practice Tip #312
November 3, 2013

Plan for your unexpected absence

If you're absent for an extended period due to a sudden, unforeseeable event you'll need another lawyer to be your backup while you're out of action.

Make arrangements with another lawyer so they know how to access and use your emergency information. This includes giving them access to your business calendar as well as contact information for your clients and the attorneys you work with outside your firm. You'll also need to provide your backup lawyer with the authority, information, and passwords to log in to your computers, applications and networks; access your bookkeeping records and bank accounts, especially client trust accounts; and whatever else they may need in order to look after your clients and practice until you return.

What preparations will you make for a potential, unexpected absence?
